South East Exposure Guided Sea Kayaking Tours

Southeast Exposure Employment Requirements

  • New guides need to be available May 1 for the season and a minimum of 21 yrs of age. There are a few positions available for college students with more limited time.

  • Guide candidates must have extensive experience in two of our four areas - ziplining and climbing, kayaking or biking, and powerboat handling.

Working for Southeast Exposure:

We have been a small family run business since 1986 and we are located 14 ½ miles north of Ketchikan in Clover Pass. We moved to our current location at 37 Potter Rd. in 2003. Our site is on five acres including waterfront. We do five tours: Tatoosh Islands Sea Kayaking Tour, Eagle Island Sea Kayaking Tour-both single and double kayaks, Clover Pass Bike, Zipline Adventure Park and boatman Zodiac Tour. Check out our prospective guide website.

We do all kayak tours, bike, and zipline course training in house. We require you to arrive with an eight hour certification in Advanced First Aid and CPR at minimum and experience in guiding or teaching in at least one area. Guides participate in an intensive one week in house training for all tours. We have many returning guides each year, a good number of them are Ketchikan locals.

Our trips range from 3 hrs to 4 ½ hours for the guest. At the height of the season guides work 2-3 trips per day back to back, spending 2-2 ¼ hours with each group. The season is from May 1 - September 26. We are flexible in these dates for some people. Hope this helps!

What we are looking for in a guide:

  • You can think on your feet or in your kayak. You take initiative and pitch in, work as a team, and follow routine procedures.
  • You can provide a guest experience of safety and confidence building and provide accurate natural history information.
  • You are on time in your personal obligations. You occasionally volunteer your time. You dress neatly and appropriately.
  • You have physical stamina, fitness and no potential physical limitations. You can lift and carry 50 pounds.
  • You have unflagging politeness, honesty, sense of humor and respect for all others.
  • You love the outdoors, and don't mind the rain, and you have good raingear.
  • You have absolute respect for your surroundings, equipment, fellow guides and the environment.

We interview via phone calls starting in January and we begin checking references, so we need a current resume and two work related references. If it seems you fit the part at Southeast Exposure after receiving resumes and references we will send you our application to be completed. We will be listening to you and considering the above - that is, your apparent quality of character.

We are an equal opportunity service provider.

We have some housing available for reasonable rates usually around $300.
